Q1 2020 Desk Setup

desk 2020 q1 scaled

I’m a somewhat minimalist when it comes to my physical workspace and tooling. My desk setup is a bit comical during these unprecedented times but none-the-less effective.

I’ve built up this collection over the course of ten plus years. If I’m writing to my younger self… take your time and switch to Apple from Windows ASAP (without using credit).

iPhone 11 Pro – Upgraded from iPhone 7. I’ve played with Android and its just not for me.

Apple Watch Series 5 – I’ve been a holdout. This is my first smartwatch.

Logitech MX Keys – I was using the smaller Magic Keyboard and ran its full-size version against the Logitech MX Keys. The MX Keys are hands down the best but it has taken me a few days to get comfortable with it (the backlighting is a nice touch and I don’t mind that it goes off after time).

Mac Book Pro 15″ 2018 – The 16″ looks very appealing but I can wait to upgrade. I don’t really use the Mac Keyboard so that’s not a big deal-breaker for me.

60″ Crank Adjustable Height Sit to Stand Up Desk (Black Frame / Matte Black Top) – I can’t work in my office at home because the little man sleeps upstairs. So, I’ve disassembled my standing desk and brought it downstairs. Since I’m 6’5″, the only issue I have with the desk is its max height of 45″. I need at least 48″ in height ???? so I use bed raisers to get the extra height I need. See it online

AirPod Pros – I use these for my open coworking space to help with noise canceling (not using the space currently). I can’t use over-ears because they dig into my antihelix and create a good amount of pain if I wear them very long.

Single LG UltraFine 5K Display – I’ve used a number of displays over the years and this is by far the best one I’ve owned. I’m not using multiple displays right now because the two display setup I was using caused me to look off to the side constantly. I’m sure I’ll try a new arrangement soon though.

Vari Dual-Monitor Arm – I wish I had gotten two Single-Monitor Arm’s instead. When I was using two screens I couldn’t adjust them easily.

Full-Size 31.5″ x 15.7″ Mouse Pad – I get the cheaper end of mousepads. I don’t mind replacing them once every 8 – 14 months. They collect so much oil and dirt.

Aeron Chair Size C – I got this chair about 10 years into my programming career. Should have saved for one sooner.

Samsung Portable SSD T5 500 GB – Some external storage is always needed for backups. Never trust a single backup source even if it is in the cloud.

Logitech MX Master 2S – Great all-around mouse and they last forever. Once you get an MX Series mouse there is no going back. Looking forward to getting the new version when this one goes out (I don’t see that being any time soon).

Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote – Purchased the device this year to get better a speaking. So much for using it this year, I guess. Maybe 2021 will turn out better for events and meetups.

KENNETH COLE Double Gusset Flapover Colombian Leather Laptop Bag – My now wife got me this bag before we got married. It’ lasted a long time and is still going. See it online

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 – Great for podcasting if you record multiple people at once in the same space or have a Skpye Box (I don’t have a Skype Box).

Heil Sound PL-2T Overhead Broadcast Boom – Great boom for a desk. Mine is old and likes to squeaks at me. I should oil it but I know I’m not likely to do so.

Dragonpad USA Pop Filter – Random pop filter I thought looked good enough.

Audio-Technica AUAT2050 – 9 Years old with a few hundred podcast episodes under the belt and its working strong. A great mic if you want to move past the USB mic class. I had a Yeti Blue Mic for a few years before upgrading.

CowboyStudio 2275 Watt Digital Video Continuous Softbox Lighting Kit with Boom and Carrying Case, 2000w Boom Kit – Nothing fancy for lighting. But, I do recommend some level of lighting gear if you shoot YouTube content from your office space.

Logitech C920 HD PRO WEBCAM – The Mac Book Pro and monitor webcams are very poor quality. Having an external camera is a must.
