BIMI might seem like a great idea, but you must get your DMARC properly configured, be prepared to spend $1500 a year for a certificate, and register your intended logo for trademark. My advice is that if you are a large brand, getting BIMI is a great idea. If you are a small company with revenue under $2 million a year, you probably don’t need to get it yet — but it can be nice.
Regardless, even if BIMI is not for you yet, getting your DMARC setup immediately and beginning research on trademarks is not bad for your brand.
BIMI SVG Requirements
If you are looking for the BIMI standard requirements for SVG files and more information, google has a great resource page. Here is the brief version of what your SVG needs to be:
SVG file attribute | Value |
---|---|
File format | SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (SVG Tiny PS) is a version of SVG. Learn more |
baseProfile attribute | tiny-ps |
version attribute | 1.2 |
<title> element | There are no strict requirements, but we recommend using a value that reflects your organization’s name. |
BIMI DNS Record
Next, for DNS, you will need the TXT record default._bimi
. You can use an online BIMI generator to create your record. The Trust Certificate URL is not required, but if left out (due to not wanting to spend $1500 a year on it or register a trademark), some email hosts will not show your logo.
Field | Value | Description |
---|---|---|
Type | TXT | This is the DNS record type. |
Host | default._bimi.example.com | Use default._bimi followed by your own domain name. Some domain providers populate your domain name automatically. If not, manually enter your domain. |
Value | (Example value)v=BIMI1;l=;a=https://example.com/brand/cert.pem | Enter the BIMI assertion TXT record that you created in Step 1. |
TTL | 1 hour (3600 seconds) | Set the TTL to the equivalent of 1 hour. |
